What makes green tea so special?
The secret of green tea lies in the fact it is rich in catechin polyphenols, particularly epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). EGCG is a powerful anti-oxidant: besides inhibiting the growth of cancer cells, it kills cancer cells without harming healthy tissue. It has also been effective in lowering LDL cholesterol levels, and inhibiting the abnormal formation of blood clots. The latter takes on added importance when you consider that thrombosis (the formation of abnormal blood clots) is the leading cause of heart attacks and stroke.
Green tea weight loss diets have been doing the rounds for some time. As usually is the case, their popularity increased once celebrities started using them and claiming weight loss on them. These days you can see green tea in several products for its claimed anti-aging effects as well as for weight loss.
1. Not A Fad Diet:
You must keep in mind the difference between the Green Tea weight loss diet and a fad diet. You do not drink green tea all day, and eat almost no food to lose weight. The use of green tea is because of its properties that have been shown to speed up the metabolism of the person drinking it, and obviously this is beneficial for weight loss. Green tea is thus one of a few tactics you can use to speed up your metabolism and increase your weight loss.
2. It increases your metabolism:
When you drink green tea the body goes through a reaction that produces heat and assists in the burning of fat. In this process heat is released and the body's metabolism gets a jumpstart. You don't have to only drink tea to get this reaction there are other foods that will have the same effect. Cold water also increases you metabolism for about ninety minutes afterwards.
These properties of green tea work together with your body to speed up weight loss. All you need to do is add green tea to a healthy balanced diet and you will reap the benefits of the green tea effects. It really is as easy as that. There is no need to include any expensive supplements if you do not wish to.
3. It suppresses your appetite:
Another very important benefit of green tea is that it reduces the appetite. By drinking Green tea on a regular basis it helps to keep your blood sugar levels stable. So, actually the best benefit of green tea is that it keeps you from being hungry all the time. Obviously this keeps you from snacking and giving in to temptations!
We all know that the body stores excess carbohydrates as fat. This is an ongoing process. It is believed that Green tea keeps the body from doing that for a short space of time after you have had a cup of Green tea. When you drink green tea, your body allows a bigger window for eating carbohydrates to use as fuel for the body and therefore less of the carbohydrates gets stored as fat. This has the added benefit of more sustained energy levels. The length of this working is not known, but we can use all the help we can get!
4. Your caffeine fix without the empty calories:
Another very important benefit of Green tea is that it helps caffeine addicts to eat fewer calories as well. Green tea also contains caffeine. So the benefit for the caffeine addicts is that they can have their caffeine fix without adding the milk and sugar, thus without adding calories to their diet.
Unfortunately it is true that green tea is rather bitter but small amounts of sugar substitutes can sweeten it to make it palatable. For many coffee drinkers cutting out the calories added by sugar and milk will be enough to start the weight loss process. I also find Green tea very beneficial as a "pick me up" when I'm having a bad day and I'm very tired. This in turn stops me from nibbling, as I tend to snack when I'm tired.
Most people do not realize how many empty calories they consume each day with drinking coffee and other beverages. Eliminating even half of those empty calories will promote weight loss. This is something to keep in mind with all beverages you normally drink, even fruit juice. Try and get into the habit of drinking Green tea when you crave something. With any diet it is always to have a kind of "stop" that you fall back on when the going starts getting tough.
Start having a cup of green tea with every meal if you enjoy having something to drink with your meals. Even one or two cups of green tea a day will let you reap the health and weight loss benefits of the tea. There are many ways you can use to get the green tea into your system for weight control. Green tea is also available as a cold tea drinks and in nutritional supplement. During the summer I find cold Green tea very refreshing and satisfying.
For me the most important part is that you can add green tea to any diet plan that you want to use. In doing so you can improve your weight loss without any real added effort. So, any diet can be turned into a green tea weight loss diet.
