I'm looking for songs that have a heavy, slow beat that is ideal for dancing. Like Sour Cherry by The Kills?

The Hardest Button to Button - the White Stripes

Heck, a lot of stuff by the White Stripes. Icky Thump.

For those who have no idea what I'm referring to, Laffy Taffy is a chewy candy that is one of the most famous candy brands in America. Outside America, taffy is also known as toffee. Either way, it's sweet, sticky and extremely popular among big and small kids alike.

The history of Laffy Taffy began in 1971 when they were produced as a tie-in to a movie that had been released that year. The movie did alright but Laffy Taffy stayed on. Each of these candy wrappers had a joke printed on it. This was done so that the word Laffy would always be made in relation to laughing. Children of the time played a part in the history of Laffy Taffy too – they sent jokes to the confectionary company, which then printed the best ones on the wrappers.

However, the sweet had already existed since the 1800's, much longer before the history of Laffy Taffy began. Taffy itself was first written of in 1817 but no one knows if it came from England, Scotland or France. The Scot version of taffy is known as tablet as it is so hard it has to be broken with a small metal hammer.

The soft, chewy candy that has come to be known as taffy nowadays made its appearance in the mid to late 1800's. It was simple to produce and was sold wrapped in wax paper. Taffy pulling, the process by which taffy is made enjoyed status as a popular social event in the 1870's. Young people of the time could socialize and court without fear of reprimand.

Laffy Taffy currently is available in flavors such as chocolate mousse, grape, cherry, banana, blue raspberry, strawberry, and sour apple. Its popularity was revived in 2005 with the release of another movie centered on an eccentric candy-maker.

How would red velvet cake with butter creme icing taste?

My daughter's b-day is on Sunday and I still haven't figured out what kind of cake to buy for it. How does this combination sound?

That would be great!
I also like red velvet with cream cheese icing, it is a little lighter

You may be of classic type or may be a dude of trendiest and latest fashion. Hairstyles and fashions of hair cut and decor are definitely a part of your personal fashion sense and styling sense. It can not be complete without that thing. For any kind of styling and setting a trend you have to be sure that your hair texture and hair quality is supporting the fact. For that you have to have a good and healthy hair. It is essential. Good and healthy hair can only be got by a through yet simple hair care routine. It is very essential to keep your manly locks looking great. Below there are complete hair care tips on the washing, toning, conditioning, and grooming and styling procedure. This is only for men's hair.

First step of washing is shampooing- choose a good quality aromatic shampoo that can attract and please others. It must have a soothing and smooth after effect. The most important thing is the pH balance of your shampoo. It determines the nature of your shampoo that is for dry hair or for oily hair etc. For clean and healthy hair flavor of that is not important but the pH balance is crucial. It must be examined. Shampoo your hair and rinse it carefully with cold water. Complete rinsing is very important as it cleanse the hair completely. No residual. Using shampoo twice is for good of your hair. Somebody thinks that it is not necessary to use it twice. It is not a ploy of the shampoo companies but it is needful. The first time you are applying it on your hair the shampoo then makes your scalp ready for wash and it starts the process. But the second one completes the job. It cleans your hair and scalp by loosening up all the cool products and make over your hair into a great looking hair.

Then comes toning of your hair shafts. Massage your hair and scalp while shampooing. With the finger balls massage the scalp gently. It is called 'spider doing push-ups' fashion. It is vital and critical in your hair care routine. It helps to loosening the sebaceous glands of your hair scalp and secrets the sebum, which is a natural form of essential fatty acids. It feels good and soothing and condition your hair and tone up your hair. There are lots of ways of massaging for different types of hair. For long hair circular massaging can be avoidable. If you want to avoid a conditioner then this process is must as it releases the oils from your hair. Do not rub your hair to dry but towel dry it and avoid the tangles.

Now comes conditioning. If your one is dry and coarse then use a conditioner or a moisturizing creme for men's hair. You can opt for a herbal one. Chemical commercial conditioners are also available I the market. For herbal choice you can make the stuff a your own home. It is safe and natural.

I have this natural cream that has A LOT of weird ingredients, safe?

Hey. Recently, I bought the "Australian lanolin moisturising cream". It says that it is natural, containing lanolin and all that. BUT, I looked at the ingredients it contains and there was like a whole long paragraph of ingredients. So I was thinking, if it's natural, then why does it have so many ingredients? Also, to anyone ever used this cream, is it good?

thanks

When a cosmetics company lists the ingredients used in their product they must use the ingredients "medical name" so, even natural things such as aloe (Aloe Barbadensis) has a weird name. Try looking up some of the ingredients....

http://www.cosmeticscop.com/cosmetic-ingredient-dictionary.aspx

One major problem with breast enlargement cream is the ineffectual method of application. Topical applications are always the least efficient method to introduce a substance into the body; the percentage absorbed into the skin and blood is tiny. It is left susceptible to being rubbed off. More importantly, there is little or no evidence of topical breast enhancement cream actually working. Invasive and potentially complicated breast enhancement surgery is often too risky or expensive, but there are other ways to maximize your breast size without wasting money on ineffective creams.

Natural breast enhancement creams is a fabulous thought for females with little breasts. Breast enhancements are also good for females who have had implants removed, women who have suffered a lot of weight loss, and females post-pregnancy. Each of these situations can cause the breasts to lose firmness and sag down. But, father time can make the breast sag. Mother nature is not forever our friend. Gravity can be resisted with natural breast enhancement herbs. Over the counter breast enhancement medication can help to build up the breast and produce a gorgeous bust line.

Natural breast enhancement creams are designed through extensive laboratory research to mimic the natural growth patterns of breasts during pregnancy or puberty. During these periods, hormonal changes cause the breasts to become larger and as such scientists have studied for decades to refine natural breast enhancement creams so that women can naturally stimulate breast growth.

BE cream is considered an optional supplement to your breast enlargement process. But considering that the entire process is optional, additional enhancements should always be considered. The cream itself is made from a combination of Pueraria Mirifica Extract, Red Clover Extract, and Sepilift. Pueraria Mirifica is considered to be one of the most potent BE herbs out there and has been used in Asian cultural medicines to provide increased growth of the glands. It has even been considered to be a preventative measure against uterus and breast cancer.

There are many types of male enhancement creams which according to the manufacturer, not only enhances the length and girth of the penis but also guarantees erection which remains for a longer period of time. The creams also act as sexual energy enhancers which result in increased sexual enjoyment.

Another ingredient used is fennel seed. Like Dong Quai, fennel seed is a proven traditional medicine primarily used for increasing a woman's menstrual flow, increasing the flow of breast, and improving the female libido. There are components in fennel seeds that are used in synthetic estrogens. Upon use, women report an increase in breast tissue as well as growth of the uterine tissue. Fennel seed basically supplements the woman's hormones to achieve the desired result.

Most of the herbs used in the best breast enhancement creams are used in different proportions. Now, too much of these herbs can have an effect on you health and some of your daily performance. Take the product as directed and you will be just fine.

After using the cream for a period of time you should noticed a difference in the appearance of your breast. The cream causes your breast to become smoother and firmer. Remember, combining the cream and the pill will work in your favor. The cream actually helps your breast stay firm and nicely shaped for good.

What is the BEST non-perfumed lotion for dry, cracked skin (hands)?

I work in an office & deal with a lot of different types of paper. I believe this is why my skin dries out so much & so badly. Often, it gets so dry, that my skin cracks & bleeds (on my hands). Sometimes they get really dry & flake a little & have a white color in spots, where the skin is flaking. I get a lot of paper cuts too, so it burns to use a lot of perfumed lotions. What is the best lotion, for the treatment of dry, chapped, cracking skin (that won't hurt my papercuts & will allow my hands to be soft & not look so chaffed)? Thanks!

there is an emoilent from mary kay that works really well. my son has dry skin and he uses cornhuskers on his hands..my mother inlaw swears by eucerin its not scented. try not using anti bacterial soaps and santizers this will dry out your skin quickly and after washing your hands pat them dry dont rub .. it takes away your natural body oils, you pmay even want to try a product that you put on at nite ..like a mask for your hands i think avon has a product. good luck

"So what home remedies for dry skin would you recommend?" Natasha asked Charlie, as she padded out of her bedroom holding a Fuller Brush toothbrush in her hand. "I mean, they're all nuts, right? Old wives' tales if you ask me."

Charlie shrugged.
"There's a ring of truth to the ones that are still around today," he insisted.
His roommate stepped towards him and poked him in the chest as she responded:
"They're all hoopla, my friend!"
"Hoopla?" he responded.
"They're all marketing gimmicks. The best anti-wrinkle creams – if you ask me, and you didn't – but the best anti-wrinkle creams on the market are actually sold as hemorrhoid creams."
"Hemorrhoid creams?" he repeated, wrinkling his own face.
"You gotcha!" Natasha poked him once more for good measure.
"Alright, first of all, what did I tell you about personal space?" Charlie asked her. "You cannot flirt with me and give me the impression that you like me – as you usually do – because it hurts me right here." He touched his chest.
She took a theatrical step back, and looked down at her tee shirt and legs as if making sure she was not invading his space. Then she pointed to the gap between her eyebrows.
"Look," she said, and he saw the patch of dry skin. "How do I fix this without using one of your stupid home remedies for dry skin?"
"You and me have known each other since when? Middle school?" Charlie asked her.
She nodded, adding: "And then some."
"And then some. And have I ever given you bad advice?"
She pouted and shook her head.
"I've never steered you wrong, right?"
"No, Charlie. But what are you going to give me to clear up my dry skin?"
"Witch hazel lotion," he declared. He pulled open the bathroom door and she followed him in. He opened the cabinet above the sink and took out the container of Fuller Brush lotion.
"Witch hazel!" she shrieked, and she then cackled like a witch. "It even sounds like something out of the seventeenth century!"

"A lot of these so-called home remedies, as you call them," Charlie began. "You take Saint John's Wort, or Valerian root, or lavender – take your pick, Tash – these are still popular today because they actually work. Now I'm not some dippy hippy, alright? I'm not a member of the yogurt mad bean curd brigade."
She laughed.
"I work a nine to five job," he continued. "...where I have to be clean shaven. I have to shave every day, and one of those home remedies for dry skin that you baulk at is this Fuller Brush witch hazel lotion. Just try it, alright?"
She looked at him in the mirror, put his arms around his shoulders and smiled. They looked at each other's reflections.
"Alright, I'll give it a go."
"Tash, you're breaking my heart here."
"Huh?" She looked at him in the mirror.
"Personal space?"
She pecked him on the cheek.
"You love it really," she said.

There are several natural acne treatments for acne and acne scar removal. The acne normally outbreaks during puberty; as at this time body produces hormone more actively. These hyperactive hormones cause excessive sebum in the skin. This haunting skin condition passes out but what it leaves behind are permanent and subtle acne scars. Scar removal can be carried out naturally through inexpensive procedures and at dermatologist's clinic that cost a lot.

There are many different types of over the counter scar treatment products available. Commonly used products are the topical use of vitamin E, scar creams based on vitamin E or onion extract like Mederma, cocoa butter, cucumber butter, lime juice, Aloe Vera, Bio Oil, skin remodeling copper peptides and so on. The truth however is that, in contradiction to the abundant positive reviews, most of these natural home remedies are not effective at all.

Treatment:

1. Rub vitamin E into your face with some roseship seed oil. After a few months of doing this, you will be able to notice that the acne scar tissue will soften and the scars will slowly diminish. The best part of this natural treatment to cure acne scars is the fact that it isn't very pricey and won't hurt one bit!

2. The cool cucumber helps in the removal of scar tissues also. A paste is made of the cucumber and is applied directly onto the scars. This helps the scars to smoothen out after a few applications left overnight.

3. Technically speaking, anti acne scar treatment kits such as Zenmed do not cure acne scars completely. There are no acne scars cure at this moment except for laser acne scar surgery which only reduces the acne scar to make it less visible.

4. Also try not to touch the injured area, bacteria from your hands can infect the wound which can cause further damage, leading to a bigger scar. Scars shrink with time so worrying about the size of your scar is not a big thing, but most people generally do not like the appearance of scars which is what makes scar treatments a very hot business today.

5. One acne scars treatment is laser treatment. This is one of the least painful treatments to undergo, because it does not cause bleeding or scraping of the skin. In fact, it feels more like a rubber band getting snapped across your skin. Usually these treatments can cost around $300 per visit.

6. Dermabrasion is a simple procedure. In this procedure, scars, wrinkles and pigmentation are treated. A small abrasive wheel or brush rotating at a high speed is used by the doctor to abrade or remove the skin with the wheel.

7. This treatment helps to fix atrophic scarring. During this treatment injections of collagen or subcutaneous fat is placed underneath the scars. This helps to raise them up to the surface and make them blend into the skin around the face. You may need this treatment more than once.

Is Creme Fresh actually sour cream or whipped cream?

If it's in a recipe, which type of milk product is this actually?
(Top contributor in the cats section mostly, not the cooking section, LOL).

Thanks everyone, this explains it for me.

i find Creme more acidic, than sweet,,, 1/3 yougurt. 2/3 sourcream, touch of sugar,,,,, wisk, do not blend,,,,, as the yougurt will seperate,,,,,, you gotta admit the mixes are endless,,,,,, mayo and sour cream rules

your a top giver here,,, you already knew that/these?

Wrinkles will form in your face as a product of these problems and some of those wrinkles could be quite deep. In addition to that, you may have problems because of overexposure to the sun in your younger years.

If you are having a tough time dealing with the aging process, a pleasant face wrinkles cream can help to smooth your skin and turn back time just a little bit.

There are several diverse means in which you could deal with your wrinkles. Along with some deep wrinkle cream, you may also discover relief from these wrinkles from processes such as dermabrasion, laser surgery, micro dermabrasion and chemical peels.

Most folks, however, are not in a position to or do not have the appeal to go through such drastic means just to get rid of some of their wrinkles. It is a much better choice for them to attempt to smooth out their skin by the use of some wrinkle creme. For that, you have a few diverse choices of anti aging skin products.

Your doctor will be able to give you a prescription for retinoid skin cream, one that is derived from the vitamin A. This provides a very sturdy antioxidants to your skin which will help to remove any of the free radicals which cause impairment to the skin. Unfortunately, there can be a number of pretty bad side effects from this particular prescription so many folks opt for an over-the-counter deep wrinkle cream or perhaps one that is made of natural-based products.

Do these deep wrinkle creams work? While some wrinkles cream only increases the amount of collagen in your face, therefore not totally erasing these deep indents in your face; there are other technologies that have emerged that have been proven to erase the deeply embeded indents in your face. Stem cell technology has been found as the lastest way to reverse aging.

There are 148 anti-aging genes in our body that control skin function. Major cosmetic companies strive to find a single compound or cosmetic that can affect just one or two genes and if they discover one, they build an entire line of products around their discovery.

One of the compounds used in Signals was scientifically proven to positively affect over 22 genes-something never before achieved according to the independent laboratory that tested Signals. The potential implications of these results go well beyond just the cosmetic industry. These gene expressions will dramatically help to reverse the aging cells of your skin and allow those cells to match the youthful cells of a 20-year old.

can i mix half of the color nourishing cream and half developer in a bowl and rest i use next time when needed

Yeah. As long as the other half that isn't used don't touch each other (and thusly no chemical reaction is formed) you can come back to it and use it later (unless there is an expiration date).

So you are finally planning to come to Ukraine and you wondering what to expect from Ukrainian culture, from your Ukrainian girlfriend...No need to wonder about it... We will give you an idea of Ukrainian culture by telling you about the most popular Ukrainian dishes that your girlfriend can cook for you ( Yes, every girl in Ukraine can cook!!) or that you can taste in any local restaurant and you simply HAVE to try them while in Ukraine!!

The best example of Ukrainian cuisine is "borsch". Borsch is a beet-based soup that can contain as many as 20 different ingredients and depending on the region and season you can enjoy red or green borsch – red one being the most popular one.

INGREDIENTS

400g beef
2 average red beets
200g cabbage
4 little potatoes
1 carrot 2 onions
2 tomatoes
salt and pepper, to taste
parsley
dill
spring onions

Potatoes are used in Ukraine as often as rice is in Japan. Popular dishes on the Ukrainian table are mashed potatoes and "deruny". "Deruny" are potato pancakes that are easy to cook, very nourishing and tasty. You can eat them either hot or cold. And because they are so easy to make you can surprise your Ukrainian girlfriend buy cooking them for her!! Potato puree is another dish that is easy to make and that is served as a favorite background for various delicacies and meat dishes.

INGREDIENTS

3 Large potatoes
1 or 2 eggs, slightly beaten
1 tblsp. grated onion
2 tblsp. flour
1/2 tsp. salt
few grains of pepper
1/2 tsp. baking powder

1) Peel, wash and grate potatoes on a fine grater and pour off some of the potato water. Add all of the ingredients and mix them thoroughly. Drop the mixture with a spoon in small rounds about the size of small pancakes onto a hot, well greased frying pan. Bake over a moderate heat about five minutes on each side, or until they are well browned and tender. Serve very hot with sour cream in bed for breakfast after a hot night with your girlfriend.

While in Ukraine, make sure you taste all the dishes we have mentioned here and you will get one more reason for marrying a UKRAINIAN lady! Or you might even decide to cook it yourself following one of our recipes! In any case, ENJOY YOUR MEAL!

What recipe has as many of these ingredients in it as possible: whipping cream, cottage cheese, pie crust, and

carrots, grape juice, cool whip, cherries, lemon, onion, and raisins. I know that this is a very random list of foods. I cooked for my boyfriend for a week and now I'm leaving. I don't want to waste these foods and would like to make one last thing.

Onion Pie
INGREDIENTS
tablespoons olive oil
salt, freshly-ground pepper, and freshly-grated nutmeg, to taste
2 eggs, beaten
1/2 cup heavy cream
1 unbaked pie shell of your choice
1. Preheat oven to 400F.
2. In a heavy-bottomed frying pan, saute onions in butter and oil. Cover pan and allow to cook over medium-low heat until onions are soft and golden, about 30 minutes, stirring occasionally. Season to your taste with salt, pepper, and nutmeg.
3. Add eggs and cream, stirring well to combine. Pour into a pastry shell and bake in preheated oven for 30 minutes.
Serves 6 to 8. (probably could add the carrot (shredded) as well.

Can also make a simple fruit salad-type thing - saute the pitted cherries in the grape juice with some lemon juice and the raisins - top with the cool whip

Gourmet Cowboy would seem to be an oxymoron, that is until you take a look at "The Gourmet Cowboy" by Bob Kinford. But then perhaps he is an oxymoron himself. Kinford has been a cowboy's cowboy for most of his fifty-five years. Until meeting his wife Catie, eight years ago, he has spent most of his adult life working on remote ranches, taking care of cattle and training horses.

Kinford's newest book, The Gourmet Cowboy (Cowboy style gourmet Cuisine) is a collection of over 90 recipes he has cooked on ranches across the west. Living miles from the nearest paved road, he did not have the convenience of stopping by a restaurant after twelve hours in the saddle so he had to cook for himself. His recipes are simple enough for a new bride, yet have a gourmet flair which would be the envy of any cooking show star. One great example is Smokey Shrimp Bisque:

20 Med shrimp
10 cloves garlic
1/2 C finely grated Muenster Cheese
1 pt cream
6 cherry tomatoes
3 green onions
2T olive oil
1 t Fresh finely chopped basil
1t fresh, finely chopped Rosemary

Clean and peel shrimp. Peel garlic. Grill garlic and shrimp for 3 minutes (preferably over charcoal,
not gas). Cut cherry tomatoes into fourths. Chop green onion into inch long pieces. Sauté' tomatoes, onion, Basil and Rosemary in olive oil over medium heat for three minutes, stirring occasionally.
Add cream and slowly stir in cheese. Raise heat to medium high. Once cream begins to boil, reduce to a simmer, stirring occasionally until cream begins to thicken. Add shrimp and garlic. Simmer
for 2 minutes.

Serves 4.

You can't accuse this recipe of being a typical cowboy recipe anymore than you can accuse "The Gourmet Cowboy" of being a typical cowboy cookbook. You can view more recipes from this unique book ath http://www.gourmetcowboy.com and taking advantage of the Amazon "Search INside" feature.

Bob Kinford is a real life working cowboy and self taught gourmet cook. He can whip up a quiche for breakfast, move several hundred cows by himself then whip up a shark souffle' for dinner.

Coconut sticky black rice recipe please!?

I saw a chef make sticky coconut black rice and it looked really chewy, not like porridgey rice pudding. Any hints? I have black glutinous rice, with no idea how to use it

Black Sticky Rice (Kao Niow Dahm)

Ingredients

2 cups whole-grain black (purple) sticky rice (or use white sticky rice aka glutinous rice)
2 cups (or 1-14oz can), coconut milk, Chao Koh or Mae Ploy brand
1/2 cup white sugar
1/2 tsp salt
2 tbsp toasted sesame seeds and/or toasted unsweetened shredded coconut (optional)
Strawberries and mint leaves (optional)

Preparation

Measure the rice into a bowl; run your fingers through the rice and check for any pebbles or other noticeable impurities. Rinse the rice a few times until the water clears. Cover with at least 2 inches of water and allow to soak 4 or more hours, or overnight. The grains will absorb water and grow in size.

When ready to cook, drain the rice and place in a heat-proof bowl with room enough for the rice grains to expand about a third more than its uncooked bulk. Add a small amount of boiling water, just enough to barely cover the rice grains. Place the bowl on a steamer rack and steam over medium heat about 30-40 minutes. If you do not have a steamer, use a large pot in which the bowl fits. Place a trivet on the bottom along with 2-3 inches of water. Bring to a boil. Balance the bowl with the rice on the trivet and add hot water to the rice. Cover and steam. Steaming the rice with a small volume of water will leave the top layer of grains intact, retaining a chewy texture which pops in your mouth like nuts. If you wish the rice to be softer, add more water to the rice.

While the rice is steaming, make the coconut sauce by heating the coconut milk, sugar and salt together in a saucepan. Stir to dissolve the sugar and salt and blend the sauce until smooth. Keep warm.

When the rice is cooked and while still hot out of the steamer, add about half of the sauce or enough to thoroughly coat the rice. Stir and mix well. The rice should be wet but not swimming in sauce. Let stand 15-20 minutes to allow the flavorings to be absorbed. Reserve the remaining sauce for spooning over the rice before serving.

The flavored rice can be molded into a round mound on a serving plate and decorated with toasted sesame seeds and/or coconut shreds, sliced strawberries and mint leaves for color. Or dish into individual serving bowls or custard cups, topped with the reserved sauce, toasted seeds and coconut and a mint leaf.

For a wetter pudding like texture, the rice may alternatively be cooked by boiling, the same way as you would regular rice. Use 2 1/2 to 3 cups of water to each cup of rice. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat to simmer and cook partially covered until the grains are cooked and surrounded by a thick sauce, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking and burning. Add sugar to sweeten to your liking. Stir well, cover and place on lowest heat setting for another 5-10 minutes. Make the sauce less sweet but more salty for contrast with the already sweetened rice. When ready to serve, dish the rice into individual serving bowls and dribble some sauce over each serving.

Serve warm or at room temperature.

(*-*)

Lean, juicy beef, mutton, and veal, form the basis of all good soups; therefore it is advisable to procure those pieces which afford the richest succulence, and such as are fresh-killed. Stale meat renders them bad, and fat is not so well adapted for making them. The principal art in composing good rich soup, is so to proportion the several ingredients that the flavour of one shall not predominate over another, and that all the articles of which it is composed, shall form an agreeable whole. To accomplish this, care must be taken that the roots and herbs are perfectly well cleaned, and that the water is proportioned to the quantity of meat and other ingredients. Generally a quart of water may be allowed to a pound of meat for soups, and half the quantity for gravies. In making soups or gravies, gentle stewing or simmering is incomparably the best. It may be remarked, however, that a really good soup can never be made but in a well-closed vessel, although, perhaps, greater wholesomeness is obtained by an occasional exposure to the air. Soups will, in general, take from three to six hours doing, and are much better prepared the day before they are wanted. When the soup is cold, the fat may be much more easily and completely removed; and when it is poured off, care must be taken not to disturb the settlings at the bottom of the vessel, which are so fine that they will escape through a sieve. A tamis is the best strainer, and if the soup is strained while it is hot, let the tamis or cloth be previously soaked in cold water. Clear soups must be perfectly transparent, and thickened soups about the consistence of cream. To thicken and give body to soups and gravies, potato-mucilage, arrow-root, bread-raspings, isinglass, flour and butter, barley, rice, or oatmeal, in a little water rubbed well together, are used. A piece of boiled beef pounded to a pulp, with a bit of butter and flour, and rubbed through a sieve, and gradually incorporated with the soup, will be found an excellent addition. When the soup appears to be too thin or too weak , the cover of the boiler should be taken off, and the contents allowed to boil till some of the watery parts have evaporated; or some of the thickening materials, above mentioned, should be added. When soups and gravies are kept from day to day in hot weather, they should be warmed up every day, and put into fresh scalded pans or tureens, and placed in a cool cellar. In temperate weather, every other day may be sufficient.

Various herbs and vegetables are required for the purpose of making soups and gravies. Of these the principal are, Scotch barley, pearl barley, wheat flour, oatmeal, bread-raspings, pease, beans, rice, vermicelli, macaroni, isinglass, potato-mucilage, mushroom or mushroom ketchup, champignons, parsnips, carrots, beetroot, turnips, garlic, shalots and onions. Sliced onions, fried with butter and flour till they are browned, and then rubbed through a sieve, are excellent to heighten the colour and flavour of brown soups and sauces, and form the basis of many of the fine relishes furnished by the cook. The older and drier the onion, the stronger will be its flavour. Leeks, cucumber, or burnet vinegar; celery or celery-seed pounded. The latter, though equally strong, does not impart the delicate sweetness of the fresh vegetable; and when used as a substitute, its flavour should be corrected by the addition of a bit of sugar. Cress-seed, parsley, common thyme, lemon thyme, orange thyme, knotted marjoram, sage, mint, winter savoury, and basil. As fresh green basil is seldom to be procured, and its fine flavour is soon lost, the best way of preserving the extract is by pouring wine on the fresh leaves.

For the seasoning of soups, bay-leaves, tomato, tarragon, chervil, burnet, allspice, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, clove, mace, black and white pepper, essence of anchovy, lemon-peel, and juice, and Seville orange-juice, are all taken. The latter imparts a finer flavour than the lemon, and the acid is much milder. These materials, with wine, mushroom ketchup, Harvey's sauce, tomato sauce, combined in various proportions, are, with other ingredients, manipulated into an almost endless variety of excellent soups and gravies. Soups, which are intended to constitute the principal part of a meal, certainly ought not to be flavoured like sauces, which are only designed to give a relish to some particular dish.
